Heat Transfer Many students think that ice cools a drink because it transfers its “coldness” to the warmer liquid. That notion is challenged by Galactic Gloop Zoo, a game in which success depends on understanding that heat is transferred from warmer to colder objects through conduction, convection, and radiation.
Assess Physics Learning Through Gameplay Physics Playground teaches and assess two-dimensional physics simulations dealing with Newton’s Laws of Motion—concepts such as gravity, mass, momentum and energy. Embedded in the game are assessments for creativity, conscientiousness and physics understanding. The game has a simple objective: get the green ball to hit the red balloon. The ball and balloon are placed in various locations on the screen, sometimes with obstacles in between, and students have to draw “agents of motion,” such as levers, springboards, pendulums or ramps, to get the ball to hit the red balloon. To increase the level of difficulty and receive more points, students can solve the problems using fewer agents to accomplish a task. Other times, difficulty is added if a level looks completely different from the previous levels. The problems have no one “right” answer.

Squishy Circuits is a project developed at the University of St. Thomas for the purpose of creating tools that students can use to create circuits and explore electronics. Squishy Circuits uses Playdough-like to enable hands-on learning about conducting and insulating currents as well as creating circuits. Circuits.io is a free website on which you can design and test electrical circuits. You can design your circuits using the virtual version of components that you could purchase and place on a circuit board. As you design your circuits, Circuits.io will tell you if your circuits will work or not.
Engineering Interact is a site for elementary school students designed by the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. Engineering Interact offers five games designed to teach students physics concepts. The games address concepts related to light, sound, motion, electricity, and space travel. The game begins with a blank slate to which students have to add plants and animals. The game plays out over twelve virtual days. Each day students have to add more elements in order to maintain balance in the ecosystem. At the end of each day students are given feedback as to which plants and animals are healthy, which are in danger, and which have died.

Habitats is a game from the Smithsonian Science Education Center. The online game challenges elementary school to match animals to their habitats. The game shows students images representative of four habitats; desert, coral reef, jungle, and marsh. Students drag pictures of animals from a list to their corresponding habitats. Students receive instant feedback on each move they make in the game. Once an animal has been placed in the correct habitat students can click on it to learn more about it in the Encyclopedia of Life.
Shutterbugs: Wiggle and Stomp. the app is a teaching game that shows children how to describe movement and motion while visiting exotic animals at the National Zoo. The app equips players with a virtual camera to take pictures of the animals as they perform motions. The app contains three types of games based on the images. The “solve” games show students an image and a clue as to which object they are seeing. There is a multiple choice “solve” and a cypher “solve.” The multiple choice game is good for beginners. The cypher game is for advanced players. In the cypher game students have to spell the name of what they think they are seeing. In the puzzle game students are given the name of an object and then have to assemble the electron microscope picture.

Assess Physics Learning Through Gameplay Physics Playground teaches and assess two-dimensional physics simulations dealing with Newton’s Laws of Motion—concepts such as gravity, mass, momentum and energy. Embedded in the game are assessments for creativity, conscientiousness and physics understanding. The game has a simple objective: get the green ball to hit the red balloon.
