PayGrade A Classroom Economy Simulation You Can Use All Year
PayGrade is a classroom economy simulation that you can use all year in just about any classroom setting. Recently, PayGrade was acquired by an online investment company called Stash. A result of that acquisition is that all of the features of PayGrade are now free for all teachers and students. PayGrade lets you create an online classroom space in which students have to complete jobs to earn virtual currency. PayGrade offers a list of jobs that you can assign to your students or you can create your own jobs for students to complete. Some of the default job listings that you'll find listed in PayGrade are secretary, conservationist, and technology assistant. The rate of pay for each job is something that you can choose. At the end of each week in PayGrade your students get paid in virtual currency that they can redeem for various rewards of their choosing. Students also have the option to just bank their virtual currency for use at a later date. PayGrade isn't just a simple "students do jobs, students get rewards" system. Life on Minimum Wage
students recognize how difficult it is to save money when your only job(s) pay minimum wage without benefits. To win (prize not determined yet) at Life on Minimum Wage the students have to reach five financial goals that they select. To earn money the students have to complete the tasks of their assigned jobs. The students then have to pay required bills before using money for their selected financial goals. As the game progresses students will be issued "surprise" cards which require them to spend money on things like speeding tickets, trips to a health clinic, and increases in rent.

Spent An online game designed to teach players about the challenges of living on minimum wage (or slightly higher) employment. Players begin by selecting a job which will provide the wages they have to survive on for a month. Then throughout the game players are confronted with challenges that they have to handle by making an "either or" choice. After each choice the player's account balance is adjusted. In addition to the change in the player's balance sheet, each choice is followed by an explanation of consequence of the choice made.
Gen I Revolution Developed for middle school and high school students, this online game helps students learn important personal finance skills as they compete against classmates. The game includes sixteen Missions in which students attempt to help people in financial trouble. To get started, students join the Gen i Revolution, select their Operatives, and begin to earn points as they work to complete each Mission. The games are free and can be played as part of a class (with a class code) or an individual. Each mission is about thirty minutes, which means all sixteen can be completed in about eight hours, or over a series of classes.
Hands-on Banking This game-based website covers budgeting, needs vs. wants, savings vs. checking, credit, banks, and where money comes from. Each lesson starts with an introduction, then an in-depth discussion on the topic. At the completion, students model the discussed activity. Instructions are both written and audio, making them accessible to lots of learners. Students finish the program with an assessment of knowledge and certificates. Despite the space-themed adventures and the friendly aliens with goofy voices, the vocabulary is sophisticated and a calculator may be required. The program is free, online (it does have a non-flash version for iPads), and is best completed over a series of sessions.BM CityOne Suitable for: Year 7-12
CityOne offers players the opportunity to optimize banking, retail, energy and water solutions via an online, sim-style game in which the player is tasked with guiding industries within a city through a series of missions. Players will make decisions to improve the city by attaining revenue and profit goals, increasing customers’ and citizens’ satisfaction, and making the environment greener with a limited budget. In parallel, players will learn how the components of business process management, service reuse, cloud and collaborative technologies make organizations in the city system more agile.
Rich Kid, Smart KidRich Kid Smart Kid is a collection of four games where three children–Ima, Jesse, and Reno–struggle with real-life scenarios such as running an ice cream stand, raising money for a personal goal, the importance of allocating earned money to varied needs, (such as charity, investments, and savings), and the difference between good debt and bad debt. Games are leveled for age groups from Kindergarten to high school. They include thorough lesson plans, learning objectives, classroom activities, and discussion questions, as well as companion websites with more resources. The program is free, online, and can be completed in four sessions–one for each game. There are also add-on low-tech options like board games.
Stock Market Game The Stock Market Game (by SIFMA) is an online simulation of the global capital markets that engages students in the world of economics, investing and personal finance. Students set up market accounts and make decisions about buying and selling based on research and real-life events. It is played by over 600,000 students every year. In the 35 years it has been around, 15 million students in all fifty states have used it to promote their financial literacy. Once registered, teachers have access to lesson plans and other resources to help unpack the Stock Market Game experience for their students.The Game is free, suggested for grades 4-12, and delivered via website or mobile app.
Trading Around the World (middle school)
An economics game hosted on the International Monetary Fund's website. The object of the game is to provide students with knowledge of the variables affecting international trade. Students experience the impact of each variable by playing the game as a representative of a country or region that is trying to buy or sell resources. The overall object of the game is to accumulate cash through buying and selling natural resources.
How the Stock Market Works Age group: High school With this free real-time streaming stock market game, students set up accounts or join an existing group. They invest virtual cash, research their strategy with over a hundred videos and tutorials, and compete against classmates and the world to see how successful they would be if they were using their money. There are lots of online stock market games (I included a different one last year). This one is used by 10,000 schools each year and 350,000 individuals. It also includes a teacher’s guide, a series of lesson plans, and the Common Core standards addressed.

Econ Ed Link hosts hundreds of lesson plans and interactive games for teaching students about a wide range of topics in economics. Teachers can search the lesson plan index by grade level, concept, standard, or length of lesson (one class period vs. multiple class periods). Most of the lessons attempt to provide "real world" context.
The interactive section of Econ Ed Link offers four pages of videos and games. The videos and games can be used as stand-alone activities or as part of lesson plan. For example, interactive game on developing good credit habits. Developing Good Credit Habits is a game appropriate for middle school and high school students. Students earn money by correctly answering questions about credit scores, interest rates, and spending practices. The purpose of the game is to purchase items and pay expenses without damaging your credit score.

BizEd a resource for economics lessons and virtual field trips. I started using BizEd a few years ago and it has been a valuable resource to me ever since. BizEd is a UK based website so some of the lessons and activities have to be manipulated a little bit for use in US classrooms, but the overall value of activities is fantastic. Some of the highlights for teachers are frequently updated lesson plans, a comprehensive glossary of terms, slide shows available for download, and fantastic virtual field trips.

How the Stock Market Works Age group: High school With this free real-time streaming stock market game, students set up accounts or join an existing group. They invest virtual cash, research their strategy with over a hundred videos and tutorials, and compete against classmates and the world to see how successful they would be if they were using their money. There are lots of online stock market games (I included a different one last year). This one is used by 10,000 schools each year and 350,000 individuals. It also includes a teacher’s guide, a series of lesson plans, and the Common Core standards addressed.

Biz Kid is 'a national financial literacy initiative based on the Emmy Award-winning public television series where kids teach kids about money and business.' - MyKidsBank "If you are a classroom teacher, parent or guardian, consider having your own artificial online bank to help assist teaching personal money management to your learners/students/children. Each virtual bank has a unique web address and the teacher, parent or guardian who signs up for the service has full private control of their bank. As the banker, the educator creates accounts within their bank and associated individual logins username/passwords for their learners. The learners may then log into the educator's private artificial bank for an experience similar to a real online bank."
- Bankaroo is a website that allows kids to manage their money online. Parents or Teachers sign up to create an account; they'll get an email registration link to confirm and then can add accounts for each kid. Kids choose a username, a password, and an avatar as well as currency.. Fill in the initial balance, then choose whether a negative balance is an option or whether a parent can add funds into the account. Kids then can begin using their account, adding or subtracting funds, or creating savings goals. They'll add a goal by clicking on the "Goals" button and then filling in what the item they'd like to save for is, how much it costs, and how much they'd like to put toward that goal weekly or monthly. Funds then are allocated toward each goal and will be subtracted automatically.
Salaries in Real-Time provides a nice starting place for conversations about purchasing power. The calculator isn't without flaws. It only accounts for the time it would take to earn the money to purchase house or car if you did nothing but save 100% of the salary. I would take these numbers and ask my students to generate more realistic projections of the time it would take to earn and save enough money to buy a car or house in cash. That assignment would require them to account for taxes, cost of living
