Virtual Worlds Designed Through Math Games Cignition’s FogStone Isle app engages students in designing their own virtual worlds through challenging mathematics games in an environment that makes learning active. Neuroscience, pedagogy, and game design are brought together in this free iPad app in which students solve complex math problems adapted to their learning level. FogStone Isle aids students in grades 4–8 in gaining conceptual understanding of math topics that students at these levels often struggle with. While the site has tons of educational resources such as: worksheets, activities, videos, and more. Best of all is the educational portal which allows educators to track student progress and differentiate instruction.
TowerStorm The game takes place in a multiplayer 3D virtual world. Players can create their avatar and unlock special power ups as they immerse themselves in a fun 3D world while solving problems in Math/Literacy aligned to Common Core Standards. The game tracks a players score and generates detail reports as well as lets a player customize and select what problems they want to encounter (i.e. Algebra, Vocabulary, etc.). students learn about six types of pathogens and the “weapons” used to fight them. Before starting the game students review each pathogen and what makes it different from the others. Then they review the methods used to fight those pathogens. In the Germ Blaster gamestudents fight off the pathogens by selecting the appropriate weapon to kill the approaching pathogens. If they get stuck and can’t remember which weapons fight which pathogens, students can pause the game to look up information about the pathogens
Monster Heart Medic is a free iPad app produced by the Lawrence Hall of Science with funding from the National Institutes of Health. The purpose of the app is to help students learn about the cardiovascular system through a game environment.
The basic premise of Monster Heart Medic is that students have to help a friendly monster named Ragnar live a healthier life. Throughout the game students conduct exams on Ragnar to monitor components of his health like blood pressure and cholesterol. Students also have to teach Ragnar how to take care of himself by making better food choices and exercising.
