Flipping Bloom’s Taxonomy Shelley Wright
"I think the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy is wrong. I agree that the taxonomy accurately classifies various types of cognitive thinking skills. It certainly identifies the different levels of complexity. But its organizing framework is dead wrong. Here’s what I propose. In the 21st century, we flip Bloom’s taxonomy. Rather than starting with knowledge, we start with creating, and eventually discern the knowledge that we need from it." Read it here.
The Flip: End of a Love Affair - Shelley Wright
Many teachers who opt for the flipped classroom strategy are not pursuing a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, says Shelley Wright. The traditional model is simply being reversed — not reinvented. The lecture (live or on video) is still front and center. “Learning isn’t simply a matter of passively absorbing new information while watching a lecture on video,” she says. “New knowledge should be actively constructed.” Read it here.

The Flipped Classroom - A short but very enlightening article on positive applications involved in “Flipping a Class”. This article reflects on at the conclusion on the pros and cons of implementing the Flipped Classroom. It states, “While I’m glad many educators seem to be jumping onboard with this model, my concerns are that some teachers may simply transfer their lectures to video and then have their students write papers or fill out worksheets during class. To me, that is bad pedagogy. However, if significant learning opportunities are capitalized on during class time, this could truly change learning and solve the problem, ...

After reading this article any educator will walk away with the idea that the Flipped Classroom is more than just videos followed by paper work. Jackie Gerstein does a wonderful job of bringing the whole idea of the process together. The graphics do a wonderful job of showing how asynchronous and synchronous connections work together to involve both the individual and the group. Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Flip
It seems like you can't open an education periodical these days without finding an article espousing the wonders of flipping the classroom. Like most initiatives in schools, flipping the classroom does have merit in the right situation. But also like most initiatives it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. Here are three questions that I have to ask before flipping a classroom.

- Do the majority of your students complete their homework assignments on time on a consistent basis? If not, there may be a larger issue of student engagement and motivation to investigate. Furthermore, if you flip the classroom and students come to class having not watched the video lessons, how do you spend your classroom time the next day? Do you let students watch the videos in class? Do you reteach the lesson that they should have watched for homework?
- Do all of your students have access to the web at home? If not, how are you going to address that? Will you distribute copies of your video files to students before they leave your classroom? Do you all of your students have computers or tablets to use at home? If the answer is "no" to one or all of these questions, are you setting up an inequitable learning environment?
- Do you have time to create quality videos? If not, will you create some and then source the rest of from the web?
Ten Questions /to Ask Before You Flip
In-Class Flip
Whereas a traditional flip depends heavily on things going right at home, the in-class flip keeps all parts of the flip at school thus ensuring that more students benefit from the flipped concept. Watch the video to learn how the In-class flip works. A working alternative that accounts for the inconveniences of the traditional flipped classroom is called 'In-Class Flip".

In-class Flip Instead of sending videos home to be viewed as homework, blend video content into a station rotationlesson, use flipped content to design a whole group rotation, or weave videos into my playlists. This helped me to address my concerns around access, coming to class prepared, and burdening students with homework.

To flip or not to flip?
"We should absolutely flip, but we should be aware of the fact that flipping instruction involves a lot more than having students watch class lectures in the comfort of their bedrooms." —Trevor Shaw
"A primary problem with the 'flipped classroom' model is that it promotes and perpetuates a long standing belief that acquisition of information through content delivery is equivalent to learning."— Reshan Richards

The Digital Divide is an important issue for some schools. One work around is to put home resources on DVDs or flashdrives

Video doesn’t have to be the only option! Try getting your students instead to learn about the topic with podcasts, infographics (Piktochart, Easel.ly, Visme, and Canva), games, scavenger hunts, interactives (ReadWriteThink), tutorials or how to manuals (Howtoons), simulations, case studies, digital scrapbooks, mindmaps (Mind42, Wiki Mindmap), virtual trips, interactive timelines (Timetoast, MyHistro), ezines (Issuu), or curated boards (Pinterest board, Educlipper board, or Blendspace)

DisplayNote Broadcast is a tool that you can use on your computer to broadcast your screen to your students’ laptop, tablet, or phone screens. It works equally well whether you use Mac, Windows, or Chromebook because it doesn’t require you to install any software. To use DisplayNote Broadcast you need a free account but your students do not. Once you’ve created an account simply go to the broadcast site and click “start a broadcast.” A six digit code is then created. Give that code to your students to enter on the DisplayNote Broadcast site and they’ll be able to follow along with everything you do on your computer. InsertLearning was founded by two high school teachers who wanted to create a richer learning experience for their students. Their aim is to help teachers turn the internet into an interactive learning experience. InsertLearning lets users take any page on the internet and turn it into a lesson. Suppose, for example, a teacher finds a great article from a website that he or she would like students to read and would also like to ask them a few questions about the content, as well as add their own commentary or insert a related video.

Kidzcourse offers twelve courses featuring hands-on activities for kids from ages six through thirteen. All of the courses include downloadable materials like templates for making board games, developing storyboards, and making escape room activities. Each course also has video tutorials to help students complete the required tasks. Some of the hands-on Kidzcourses that stood out to me were Building an Escape Room, Paper Circuits, Save the Ocean, and Build an App. Kidzcourses can be done at home with parents. They can also be completed as in-classroom activities. Kidzcourse provides educators with supply lists, learning objectives, and handouts for each course. Some of the courses could be great as group projects that students do at the start of the school year to build some good cooperative learning habits in a fun and educational way. www.freetech4teachers.com
